AJGA: Rose Zhang keeps it rolling at Rolex Girls Junior
With her eight-shot, 15-under-par victory, Zhang now holds all three Rolex honors in the same calendar year. The 2019 Rolex Tournament of Champions, 2019 Rolex Junior Player of the Year, and now the 2020 Rolex Girls Junior Championship see Zhang’s name atop the charts.
Beginning the fourth and final round with a five-shot advantage, Zhang saw no dramatics like she saw in the championship match against Gabriela Ruffels in the U.S. Amateur just two weeks ago.
Zhang was in the captain’s seat the entire front-nine, posting an even-par 36, Zhang needed to pick up the pace holding a slim margin as she and hopeful contenders Bohyun Park and Catherine Rao made the turn.
Zhang did exactly what USGA champions do. She immediately birdied No. 10 to get to 11-under for the championship. Coming down the stretch, Zhang turned on the afterburners to separate herself from the field with four-consecutive birdies on Nos. 15-18 to put away the championship.
Both Park and Leila Raines split second-place with totals of 9-under 279. Rao finished in solo fourth after a final round 70 to finish 8-under for the tournament.
