Grand Seiko’s New Platinum and Gold Watches Commemorate Two of its Most Important Milestones - Robb Report

wristwatch.indah.link

Grand Seiko is on the brink of two momentous anniversaries in its company history. To commemorate these important milestones, the brand is launching two limited-edition timepieces that showcase its horological expertise.

Seiko founder Kintaro Hattori was born in Tokyo, Japan 160 years ago and started his company at the young age of 21. To honor the first of these special occasions, Seiko’s elite Micro Artist Studio has crafted The Kintaro Hattori 160th Anniversary Limited Edition SBGZ005, a model powered by the manufacture’s infamous Spring Drive movement. To honor the birth of the company itself, Seiko is unveiling the Seiko 140th Anniversary Limited Edition SBGW260.

It’s logical that the watch honoring Hattori should be the more rarefied of the exclusive duo. Measuring 37.5mm across and 9.6mm thick, the 160th Anniversary Limited Edition has a case forged from platinum 950 that was Zaratsu polished for a distortion-free finish. Delicate processing techniques create a dial of subtle depth variation marked with solid 14K gold indexes behind sapphire crystal for effortless legibility.

Internally, it is powered by a Caliber 9R02 movement which is assembled, adjusted and finished by hand, and incorporates an 18k yellow gold plaque engraved with “Micro Artist”, a phrase which can be replaced with one of your choice. It produces 84 hours of power reserve, is water-resistant to 30 meters and secures with a supple alligator strap featuring a tri-fold clasp.

The 140th Anniversary Limited Edition is likewise beautifully crafted and doubles as a bit of physical history: it’s a faithful recreation of the first Grand Seiko watch from 1960. Measuring 38mm across and 10.9mm deep, the slender style has a case molded from warm 18K rose gold to coordinate with the dial’s gold indexes.

Its manually wound Caliber 9S64 movement has 24 jewels, an accuracy rate that is +5 to -3 seconds per day and produces a 72-hour power reserve. The anniversary is marked by the trademark “S” engraved on a gold plate set into the movement’s bridge, something Hattori registered in 1900 as the symbol of his Seikosha factory. An alligator strap with a tri-fold clasp completes the sleek model.

Both watches will be available in January 2021 exclusively at Grand Seiko boutiques. The Kintaro Hattori 160th Anniversary Limited Edition SBGZ005 is limited to a run of 50 and retails for $103,000 while the Seiko 140th Anniversary Limited Edition SBGW260 is limited to 350 examples which retail for $29,000 apiece.

B.C. tribunal dismisses complaint over alleged faulty Seiko watch, ruling claim was filed out of time - The Georgia Straight

wristwatch.indah.link

A complaint over a watch that supposedly kept the wrong time failed before a B.C. Civil Resolution Tribunal.

Tribunal vice chair Shelley Lopez dismissed the claim because it was filed out of time.

Lopez explained that under the Limitation Act in B.C., a claim for debt or damages must be started within two years of the day it was discovered.

This did not happen in the case brought by complainant Yi Wu.

Wu wanted a $163.90 refund for a Seiko watch she bought.

She said that the device did not keep accurate time from the first time she wore the automatic watch.

Wu also claimed $18.77 in shipping fee for the watch’s repair.

In addition, Lopez recalled in her reasons for decision, the buyer sought $500 for her time spent and frustration in the dispute.

Wu bought the watch from Time’s Fashion Accessories Ltd. (TFA).

Also named respondents were Seiko Hong Kong Limited (Seiko). TFA is an authorized dealer of Seiko. Likewise named respondent was Odyssey Time Inc. (Odyssey).

Lopez noted that Wu said that the watch “did not work as soon as she bought it from TFA on December 22, 2017”.

In her May 7, 2020 application with the tribunal, the woman said that she was “first aware of the claim in ‘around January 2018’”.

“This is consistent with Mrs. Wu’s evidence that she took the watch back to TFA in late December 2017 for repair, but that the watch’s problem of not keeping accurate time was never solved,” Lopez wrote.

Lopez explained that the May 7, 2020 tribunal application stopped the two-year limitation period.

“So, since Mrs. Wu’s claim arose in January 2018, before May 7, 2018, it was filed out of time,” Lopez wrote.

Lopez recalled that Wu brought the watch back to TFA a number of times.

The shop determined that there was nothing wrong with the watch.

Later, Wu sent the watch directly to Seiko for repair, and the company “installed a new movement and ‘regulated’ the watch”.

“Seiko and Odyssey say that replacing the movement is equivalent to replacing the watch, which I accept as it is undisputed,” Lopez stated.

The respondents performed the attempted watch repairs at no charge to Wu, Lopez also recalled.

“There is no expert evidence before me, and no evidence from anyone saying the watch sold to Mrs. Wu had anything wrong with it,” Lopez noted.

Re-creation of the first Grand Seiko in rose gold Seiko 140th Anniversary Limited Edition (Rose Gold, LE 350 pieces)  Recommended retail price in Europe: €29,800 / USD 31,500

Commentary

This is possibly the last of a long line of special anniversary editions released by Grand Seiko and Seiko this year. It is a pity that the Grand Seiko Summit event in Tokyo was not able to go ahead due to the COVID-19 pandemic, as it would have been very interesting to attend and see these new pieces when it was released.

This latest release is perhaps the most interesting. The very beautiful tribute to the founder Kintaro Hattori, whose great grandson Shinji Hattori is currently at the helm of the company. In traditional Japanese style, this is indicative of the honour Grand Seiko is placing on this new piece.

Very classical in aesthetic design of the case, dial and hands, and the platinum version is equipped with the superb Caliber 9R02 Spring Drive hand wound movement made in-house by the Micro Artist Studio in Shiojiri. This is a remarkable movement, and is a derivative of the 7R14 movement used in the Eichi II. While the re-creation is in 18k gold and fitted with the Caliber 9S64, first introduced in 2011. Both these movements are the highest levels Grand Seiko offers and have been used in various Elegance Collection watches.

Seiko’s founder Kintaro Hattori was born in central Tokyo in 1860 at a time in Japanese history characterized by rapid modernization and westernization. The young entrepreneur saw the sudden and momentous changes in Japanese life as a moment of opportunity. In 1881, at the age of just 21, he set up his own company, “K. Hattori”, to wholesale and retail imported timepieces and, just twelve years later, he established a factory which he called Seikosha, “The house of precision”, to produce his own clocks and, later, watches. His aim was for Seikosha to be able to manufacture and assemble all the components for its timepieces in-house by mastering every aspect of the horological art. Step by careful step under Kintaro’s leadership, the company achieved his aim. Its long list of watchmaking innovations down the decades bears testament to his remarkable vision and continues to inspire it to this day.

Now, as the year of the 160th anniversary of his birth draws to a close, Grand Seiko proudly celebrates the life and achievements of Kintaro Hattori with a Spring Drive masterpiece. 2021 will be the 140th anniversary of the founding of his company and this landmark is also commemorated with another exceptional timepieces. Both watches exemplify Kintaro’s dedication to complete mastery of every aspect of the watchmaker’s art.

Grand Seiko Masterpiece Collection Kintaro Hattori 160th Anniversary Limited Edition SBGZ005

The 160th anniversary of Kintaro Hattori’s birth is marked with a remarkable timepiece made by the elite team of watchmakers at the Micro Artist Studio. The softly rounded case is made of Platinum 950 and is Zaratsu polished to a perfect distortion-free finish. The sapphire crystal glass is dual-curved and each surface is shaped to ensure perfect legibility.

The dial’s intricate pattern is made possible by processing techniques that create a delicate dial surface with varying depths. As has been the tradition since the 1960’s, a star mark located at six o’clock denotes that the indexes are of solid gold. The interplay of light and shadow on the dial that is an essential part of the signature of every Grand Seiko watch is accentuated by the application of seconds markers that enhance the legibility of the time. The indexes and the hour and minute hands are in 14K white gold and are specially cut to create a sharpness that amplifies the enduring beauty of the gold.

The watch is powered by Caliber 9R02 which is assembled, adjusted and finished by hand by the craftsmen and women of the Micro Artist Studio. It delivers a power reserve of 84 hours thanks to the Dual Spring Barrel in which two independent thin, long mainsprings are set in parallel in a single barrel, and the Torque Return System*. This power reserve is longer than the 7R14 movement’s 60 hours used in the Eichi II.

The caliber also incorporates an 18k yellow gold plaque which carries the engraved words “Micro Artist” but which can, if the owner so wishes, be replaced with a word of their choice. This slim and exquisite timepiece has a depth of just 9.6mm and will be available in January 2021 as a limited edition of 50 in the Grand Seiko Boutiques worldwide.

*Torque Return System: When the mainspring has been fully wound and the torque output is at its highest, approximately 30% of the available power is not needed to maintain the precision of the watch, and is in effect wasted in a normal movement. The Torque Return System uses this energy to rewind the mainspring, resulting in an increase in the power reserve. In Caliber 9R02, this system is activated for 48 hours after the mainspring has been fully wound.”

Re-creation of the first Grand Seiko in rose gold Seiko 140th Anniversary Limited Edition SBGW260

The release in January 2021 of a new re-creation of the first Grand Seiko from 1960 opens a year of celebration of the 140th anniversary of the company’s foundation.

This commemorative timepiece offers a remarkable blend of slimness, efficiency and precision. The case is just 10.9mm in depth, the power reserve is 72 hours and the accuracy rate is +5 to –3 seconds per day, all made possible by the hand-winding Caliber 9S64 which powers the watch. The case and indexes are in 18k gold and the anniversary is marked by the trademark “S” engraved on a gold plate set into the movement’s bridge. Kintaro Hattori registered this mark in 1900 as the symbol of the Seikosha factory. The watch will be presented in January 2021 as a limited edition of 350 in Grand Seiko Boutiques worldwide.

The Best Dive Watches Under $500 - gearpatrol.com

wristwatch.indah.link

Today's watch buyer is completely spoiled for choice: Never before have there been so many awesome options, both quartz and mechanical, from companies big and small, for such little money. Believe it or not, you can snag an awesome dive watch for under $500. Many of these even feature automatic movements and premium features such as sapphire crystal and matching steel bracelets with dive extensions.

Keep in mind that you're not going to get the fit and finish of, say, and $8,000+ Rolex for $500 — the tolerances won't quite be there, and neither will the materials be top-shelf. However, you can get a great-looking, reliable timepiece that will serve you well for many years. Some of these will be quartz-powered, sure, but this can be advantageous in settings in which your watch will regularly get the crapped kicked out of it.

The following represent a few of our favorite picks for under $500, but keep in mind that many of the companies listed have numerous divers at this price point, so it's worth diving deeper into their range.

With its in-house automatic movement, unidirectional dive bezel, optional matching steel bracelet and day-date display, this is a watch that punches way above its weight class.

10 Decent Watches You Can Buy on Amazon - Rolling Stone

wristwatch.indah.link

Products featured are independently selected by our editorial team and we may earn a commission from purchases made from our links; the retailer may also receive certain auditable data for accounting purposes.

Few things are more fun to shop for than watches, hence the whole culture of watch enthusiasts. But watch shopping is changing. It used to be the case that in-the-know watch lovers would have their go-to watch shops around town (or around the world) that carried the best timepieces. But now, not only are watch shops online, but you can buy some of the best watches on Amazon. Even better: with Amazon Prime, that means top-notch watches are just two days away (get a free 30-day trial to Amazon Prime here).

What to Know Before Buying a Watch

There’s a lot to know about watches. But, luckily, you only really need to know a few things to score a great timepiece. Below are a few key considerations that all watch-owners-to-be look at before making a purchase.

Movement: A watch’s movement is typically categorized as either automatic, mechanical or quartz, indicating how the watch actually functions. Automatic movements utilize the kinetic movement of the wearer’s wrist to generate energy and is often considered to be the most desirable movement. Mechanical movements must be hand-wound every couple days and are more old school (yet oddly satisfying). Finally, there’s quartz, which is a battery-powered movement found in most affordable watches.

Crystal: Watchmakers use different materials to construct the dial cover (a.k.a the crystal), with some scratching more easily than others. Sapphire crystal (synthetic-sapphire) is the best of these materials as it’s nearly scratch-proof and effectively reduces glare. Other materials include mineral crystal, which is specially-treated glass, and acrylic crystal, which is similar to plastic.

Style: Before buying any watch, consider your personal style and your current collection of watches, if you have any. The best watches get worn as often as possible, so always go with something that fits your look and fills a gap in your watch quiver.

Brand: Watchmaking is a fine art, making the artist very important. The brand really does matter when shopping for the best watches, as some brands are well-known for keeping time year after year.

Size: We’re in an interesting phase of watch trends right now where big and masculine watches are just as cool as smaller throwback watches. This means that any size will look good, but be sure to check a watch’s case diameter and maybe measure your wrist. For reference, a “regular” sized watch is about 36-40mm.

Water-resistance: Not all watches are safe for swimming or wearing in the shower – even if they’re rated at 30 meters water-resistant. Generally, watches with less than 50 meters water-resistance are only safe in rain or occasional splashes. Over 50-meter water-resistance means you can take a watch swimming, and watches with more than 100 meters water-resistance are prepared for serious diving.

The Best Watches on Amazon

Of course, watch shopping on Amazon comes with one major hurdle: volume. There are tens of thousands of watches on Amazon, and many are not worth buying. To help navigate all these options, we did some sifting to find the 10 best watches on Amazon right now. We found great options from well-known brands, including some best-sellers that we didn’t expect to find on the e-commerce giant.

1. Q Timex Reissue

Timex has kept the attention of watch lovers over the past couple years by releasing some incredible throwback watches. Their latest hit is the Q Timex Reissue, a line which recreates Timex’s 1979 diver watch.

One of the best-sellers from this collection is this navy and red “Pepsi” colorway that’s even more wearable today than it was more than 40 years ago. The build and movement are fairly basic (acrylic crystal, quartz movement) but the classically cool style more than makes up for that.

2. Seiko 5 Green Canvas

The Seiko 5 is something of a unicorn in the watch world thanks to a reliable automatic movement and a price tag around $100 to $150. It’s a great first watch for aspiring watch enthusiasts, but it’ll get approving nods from veteran collectors too. The crystal is decent as well, using Seiko’s Hardlex material that’s somewhere between mineral and sapphire in terms of scratch-resistance. The beloved watch comes in many styles, but this rugged military-inspired option is one of our favorites.

3. Citizen Promaster

Citizen is widely respected throughout the watch world, largely due to their special solar-powered Eco-Drive movement. It’ll keep time for up to 10 years, according to Citizen, using both natural and artificial light. Add 200 meters water-resistance and you’ve got an incredibly reliable timepiece. Plus, the polyurethane band and classic diver looks make the watch wearable almost everywhere from the office to the ocean.

4. Timex Marlin

Another best-selling watch from Timex’s throwback lineup is the Marlin. It’s mid-century elegance through-and-through with a slim, minimal look and a 33-millimeter width. And it’s not just posing as old school either, as the Marlin boasts a rare mechanical movement that requires hand-winding every day or two. I’ve personally worn this watch for over two years, and this winding ritual has become something I look forward to each day.

5. Braun Watch

Braun originally gained traction in the Fifties with the help of famed interior designer Dieter Rams. The unique timepieces that came out of this partnership ooze mid-century modern appeal, which, as you might know, has made a huge comeback over the past decade. Braun’s latest pieces, such as this black mesh band watch, stick to the mid-century look but keep it fresh enough to rock with just about everything in your closet. The watch is also built for daily use with a mineral crystal and 50-meter water-resistance.

6. Bulova Men’s Moonwatch

Diving watches might be the most recognizable watch style, but we think everyone should consider a racing watch as well. The best racing watches, such as this Moonwatch from Bulova, strike a balance between casual and classic that makes them great for daily wear. Technically this is actually an astronaut’s watch, as it replaces the Bulova that NASA used for moon landings. The Moonwatch is very attainable, but throws in some high-end features such as sapphire crystal. It is slightly on the large side at 45 millimeters, but we think the size works well.

7. Bulova Ambassador

Gold watches have become mainstream over the past couple decades as streetstyle influencers work the flashy timepieces into their looks. Perhaps thanks to this trend, it’s now easier than ever to score a good looking gold-tone watch without dropping $30k. Bulova’s Ambassador watch is a great example, sporting a unique tonneau-shaped case, a white dial and a gold-tone bracelet. It’s certainly a statement, but it’s easier to pull off than you might think.

8. Seiko SARB035

Seiko’s SARB line is essentially an upgraded version of the Seiko 5. Almost every aspect is better with the SARB, including a synthetic-sapphire crystal face, a better, more reliable automatic movement and 100-meter water-resistance. The materials on the SARB are upgraded as well, and it might not show in pictures, but the SARB just looks more expensive in person. Throw in timeless styling and you’ve got a watch that’s ready for any adventure.

9. Movado Bold

The Swiss-made, American-designed brand Movado has made a name for itself with minimal, elegant watches with an instantly-recognizable museum dial. This Bold model is a great choice for wearing to the office or on nights out with a look that’s understated yet eye-catching. Although it looks quite elegant, the watch can actually take some tumbles with a special K1 mineral crystal face. This is a great Rolex alternative too, matching the more expensive brand’s two-tone design with a similarly-styled link bracelet. The Movado delivers a ton of value too at 1/10th the price of a Rolex.

10. Casio Sport Watch

Not so long ago, Casio watches were reserved for geeks. Now, you can catch everyone from George Clooney to Tyler, the Creator to Ryan Gosling sporting the sub-$20 Eighties icon. This black resin strap model is one of our favorites, nailing the norm-core look. The resin strap, small design and light weight make the watch super comfortable – which is probably why the aforementioned celebs opted for a Casio over their Rolexes.

Seiko Voice Digital Watch makes comeback after 11 years - 9to5Toys

wristwatch.indah.link

Following 11 years of silence, the Seiko Voice Digital Watch is making a comeback. This news comes just two months after the company unveiled a limited edition Street Fighter V collection. The returning timepiece boasts an eye-catching style that is bound to stand out from the pack. Even better, there will be three styles to choose from. While the watch is made with accessibility in mind, the timepiece business is largely driven by new and unique styles, an area that these offerings ace with flying colors. Continue reading to learn more.

Seiko Voice Digital Watch delivers unique look, accessibility features, more

After 11 years, Seiko is officially releasing an updated Voice Digital Watch. The company has actually released several watches for the visually impaired with its first offering dating back to 1939. Unsurprisingly, at that time its first release was a pocket watch aimed at injured military officers. Fast-forward to today and it’s a wristwatch much like the rest of Seiko’s lineup.

The new offering will come in three colorways: black, silver, and pink. It’s already received a “Good Design Award,” exemplifying a likely outcome that many may like the appearance of this watch. While the press of a button can make this watch read the time aloud, there is also a small digital clock perfect for anyone that isn’t visually impaired.

Not only can this watch read the time aloud but it also wields alarm and stopwatch functionality. The new release is based on the most recent design which was originally unveiled in 1998. Production of that model has been halted for around 11 years, so it’s great to see the Seiko Voice Digital Watch not only reappear but also get a redesign.

Pricing and availability

The new Seiko Voice Digital Watch lineup will be priced from around $160. Availability appears to be limited to Japan at this time, but there’s always a chance these could get imported to the US at a later date. Models SBJS013, SBJS015, and SBJS016 are all listed on Seiko’s website now and are slated for release on December 11.

9to5Toys’ Take

I think we can all agree it’s a truly wonderful thing to see companies deliver products that aim to improve life for those with disabilities. In many instances, accessibility products too often debut with bland and boring styles. Thankfully that’s not the case with the new Seiko Voice Digital Watch.

At any rate, I hope Seiko Voice Digital Watch proves to be successful among those with or without a disability. Products like iPhone are mainstream but still manage to keep accessibility top of mind. It’d be great to see more new releases tackle problems while maintaining a desirable appearance.

wristwatch.indah.link
This striking stainless steel timepiece is limited to 500 pieces
Grand Seiko x Hodinkee (4)

When you want a reliable, iconic watch with loads of style, rugged functionality and history, you can absolutely turn towards Grand Seiko. And when you want to ensure that watch is on the cutting edge and incorporates only the finest materials and an expert eye to detail, you can also turn towards watch enthusiast resource Hodinkee. When the two team up? Even better.

Grand Seiko x Hodinkee (3)

That’s what’s caught our eye when it comes to the just-launched Grand Seiko Automatic GMT SBGM239 Limited Edition for HODINKEE, part of a notable series of launches from HODINKEE this fall. Those launches include the HODINKEE x Timex Q Watch, and the partnership with Grand Seiko takes thing a step further when it comes to accessible luxury.

Grand Seiko x Hodinkee (1)

The Grand Seiko Automatic GMT SBGM239 Limited Edition Watch retails for the investment-level price of $5,400, and seeing as the launch is limited to just 500 timepieces, you’ll want to act quickly to get this handsome stainless steel watch.

Grand Seiko x Hodinkee (2)

We especially love the sporty and classic appeal, to go along with a twilight blue dial that celebrates the transition from day to night, known as “yugure” in Japan, (and it’s fitting that you can certainly wear this watch from sunrise to sunset either way). The in-house self-winding 9S66 caliber movement is put through rigorous testing by Grand Seiko to ensure maximum durability, and the nicely sized 39.5mm case diameter should look great on any wrist (not to mention with seasonal fall and winter style staples in tow).

Grand Seiko x Hodinkee (5)

Turn towards a heritage watch brand and the experts at HODINKEE when it comes “time” to pick up your next watch, because neither side will let you down.
