Smartwatches have evolved rapidly over the past five years, and as a result they're more popular than ever. Naysayers be damned, devices like the Apple Watch and Fitbit are now an ever-present sight on peoples' wrists; keeping us connected like never before, helping us to track our fitness, travel around seamlessly through GPS and much, much more. Prices are dropping too. Which is to say, it's about time that you invested.

Officially starting on 27 November (though retailers are now dropping prices on top-end tech right now to loosen up your wallet) Black Friday presents the perfect opportunity to pick up a deal. We have found huge discounts on some of the biggest and best brands so far, from Apple and Samsung, to Huawei, Fitbit and Garmin, including some of the very latest devices, so you can buy a luxury, expensive smartwatch without having to pay top dollar.

In previous Black Friday sales, we have seen Apple Watches drop by more than 20%, which is pretty significant on a £500 bit of kit. All the watches we have found below are the top-end, premium devices for each brand, but it’s worth checking out the older models if you’re looking to cut the price down a bit.

They all have interchangeable strap sizes, so you can get the right fit for you, though some will cater to larger wrists better than others. They are also all waterproof to some extent, with some allowing you to go deep-sea diving up to 100m – all will cope with a swim in a pool or the shower, though.

We discuss battery life, which is important when it comes to smartwatches. Apple’s products are notorious for having small batteries, while others will last more than two weeks on a single charge or even up to 21 days.

Finally, consider the storage of each device, as you can store apps and songs on your watch if you don’t have your phone on you. These devices can range from 8GB up to 32GB. Below we have laid out all the best deals we have found.

1 Apple Watch Nike Series 6 GPS + Cellular

Apple johnlewis.com

£479.00

Strap size: 40-44mm strap

Water resistance: 50M

Battery life: 18 hours

Storage space: 32GB

Apple’s latest Watch Series 6 is a properly powerful, advanced device. The watch face - which is always on and ready to be used - can be tailored to suit your outfit, matching your clothing or your mood on any given day and can be customised to only show the info you need, from the weather to your current step count.

This does have an impact on the battery, which lasts less than a day, but it comes with some enhanced features from its predecessor. With a new sleep tracker, water resistance to 50M and compatibility with all your Apple Store smartphone apps, including the long-standing Apple Pay to store debit and credit cards, it’s a great smartwatch to pick up this year.

Some new features like the ECG might not be a regularly-used feature for most wearers, but Apple has a wealth of other fitness features to help you stay on track, reminding you to stand up and get moving if you’re being too sedentary.

John Lewis is currently offering three months of Apple Fitness+ for free. You can use this app for personalised workouts and nutrition plans, bringing the gym to your living room.

2 Apple Watch SE GPS + Cellular

Apple johnlewis.com

£349.00

Strap size: 40-44mm strap

Water resistance: 50M

Battery life: 18 hours

Storage space: 32GB

Featuring the same large OLED display as the Series 6, the SE is a more budget-friendly option even before you think about Black Friday discounts.

The major difference between this and the Series 6 is the fact that the display will only turn on when you rotate your wrist to your face, rather than always being on for you to glance at. In practice this isn’t that big a deal, and we have personally found the always-on display to be only useful if you’re holding something and you just want to check a notification on your watch.

It will house all the same apps, like Spotify, Uber, Maps, etc, to be linked up with your smartphone and will keep track of your movements and exercise, if you’re so inclined. It will also use Apple Pay, which is helpful.

John Lewis is giving you £120 if you swap in an old watch to trade in for this one, and you can get the same three months free on Apple’s Fitness+ to get back into shape this winter.

3 Fitbit Charge 4 Special Edition

Fitbit amazon.co.uk

£145.82

Strap size: 40-44mm strap

Water resistance: 50M

Battery life: 7 days

Storage space: 32GB

While Fitbit might be more focused on fitness fanatics, the Fitbit Charge 4 is a surprisingly powerful smartwatch in its own right. Many of the features are geared towards managing your health, with sleep statistics, step counters, and GPS tracking, but it can also send and receive texts and calls, store apps and music, and cope with modern day life.

The battery life is reasonable at seven days, and you can receive all your Twitter and Instagram notifications or fire off an email or two should you need it.

Pair it up to your phone to get real-time data on your exercises and customise the watch face to make yours unique.

4 Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 Stainless Steel

Samsung amazon.co.uk

£338.00

Strap size: 41-44mm strap

Water resistance: 50M

Battery life: 56 hours

Storage space: 8GB

The Galaxy Watch 3 has a classic wristwatch design made from stainless-steel and leather. It does have a touchscreen circular display, but you can use the rotating bezel to select apps or navigate the menu and access apps. It will also automatically register if you’re working out (unlike others on this list that require a manual start-up to exercising) and log them on the phone app. It’s also compatible with Apple or Android devices.

There are two things we like about this watch that are unique to Samsung devices. The first being the ability to charge up other devices like wireless headphones using the watch’s battery.

The second is a smart feature that will recognise the colour clothes you’re wearing (take a selfie and analyse it on the phone app) and match the watch face to those colours, so your styling will always be on point.

Save £60 in Amazon’s Black Friday sale now.

5 Garmin fēnix 6X Pro GPS

Garmin johnlewis.com

£549.00

Strap size: 41-52mm

Water resistance: 100M

Battery life: Up to 80 days (Battery Saver Mode), 21 days in smartwatch mode

Storage space: 32GB

Garmin offers a tougher, more durable smartwatch that will give you all your social media notifications while hiking up in the mountains. The Fenix 6X Pro is one of its most premium models.

The larger touchscreen display is always on (much like Apple’s Series 6) and will open access to music, thousands of apps, enhanced GPS tracking and fitness monitoring should you need it.

The battery is absurdly long, lasting 21 days in standard smartwatch mode, but you can boost it to a whopping 80 days in battery saver mode. This will strip back the watch to only give the time and a few minor features, but is great for saving energy.

If you’re into sports, Garmin has a wealth of features that go way beyond simple step-monitoring. It will store navigation guides to a huge array of running and walking routes and recommend them to you based on proximity, as well as storing in-depth knowledge of 2,000 worldwide ski resorts and maps of 41,000 golf courses if you’re feeling a bit fancy.

6 HUAWEI Watch GT 2 (46 mm) Smart Watch

HUAWEI amazon.co.uk

£122.99

Strap size: 41-46mm strap

Water resistance: 50M

Battery life: Up to 80 days (Battery Saver Mode), 21 days in smartwatch mode

Storage space: 8GB

Another Android device, Huawei’s Watch GT 2 is an impressive premium smartwatch for a lower cost – particularly with the 38% discount on Amazon right now.

We have used this watch ourselves and we enjoy the compliments we get on how good it looks on our wrist. We also really like the battery life, which will easily last two weeks (much better than our Apple Watch Series 5’s 18 hour life) and you can choose to have the display as “always on” or “rotate to wake”, which is a nice touch.
