A very rare Rolex Cosmograph Paul Newman ref. 6264 “John Player Special” watch has just sold for a staggering $1,545,723 USD over at Sotheby’s. Originally estimated to go for $400,000 – $800,000 USD, the 1969 18K yellow gold watch broke the record for the most expensive watch sold at a U.K. auction and Sotheby’s record for price sold at an online auction.
The watch gets its name from its gold case and bracelet construction that’s matched with a black dial. This is the same color combination found on the ’70s-era Lotus Formula 1 John Player Special livery. While there are stainless steel versions of this watch floating around, Sotheby’s estimates that there are only 10 of the gold versions in existence, and only a few of those carry the PN dial.
