After delaying its product introductions and imposing temporary factory closures due to the Covid virus, Rolex has finally introduced its long-awaited new 2020 lineup, including new Submariner and Submariner Date models with subtle upgrades.

The redesigned Submariner Ref. 124060 without date and Submariner Date Ref. 126610, which will replace the existing models, have slightly larger 41mm cases (up from 40mm) and remodeled bracelets. The collection is also being overhauled with new movements, caliber 3230 for the Submariner, and 3235 for the Submariner Date, both state-of-the-art Rolex movements that are being used in the Submariner for the first time. They offer 70-hour power reserves compared to 48 hours in previous movements. Over the last few years, Rolex has been gradually updating the calibers in all of its watches. One other subtle difference between the new and old Submariner: there is now a tiny Rolex crown logo between “Swiss” and “Made” below the six-o’clock marker on the dial.
There are models in Oystersteel, Rolex’s proprietary stainless steel, with black dial and matching Cerachrom (ceramic) bezel, as well as a two-tone Rolesor version – Oystersteel and 18k yellow gold with a royal blue dial and blue Cerachrom bezel. The two new versions of the Submariner Date are either Oystersteel with black dial and green bezel or 18k white gold with black dial and blue bezel. The graduations and numerals on the bezels, are PVD coated with either platinum or yellow gold.
The Oyster bracelet on the new versions is equipped with Rolex’s patented Oysterlock folding safety clasp along with the Rolex Glidelock extension system, allowing the length of the bracelet to be adjusted up to 20 mm. On the 18k white gold version of the Submariner Date, the Oyster bracelet includes ceramic inserts inside the links to enhance its flexibility and longevity. The Rolex Submariner Ref. 124060 is priced at $8,100. It is water resistant to 300 meters, and the dial is black lacquer. The Submariner was last updated in 2012, with the introduction of the ref. 114060.
Watch this space tomorrow for news about the new Rolex Datejust, Oyster Perpetual and Sky-Dweller models.
Given that this is an iteration of an existing model – a refresh, if you will – the watch maintains the same 42mm sizing. Moreover, it continues to boast the fluted, rotatable bezel which is used to set the watch in tandem with the Ring Command system. As mentioned, there are a variety of Sky-Dweller variants receiving this new update: three dials colors in yellow gold and three dial colors in Everose gold. These new watches, as well as the entire stable of new Rolex releases, will arrive at authorized dealers on Wednesday, September 2.
Hopes that authorised dealers will start selling Rolex’s 2020 watches immediately have been dashed.
There had been speculation that Rolex would follow Tudor by simultaneously unveiling its novelties on September 1 and organising for them to go on sale.
Tudor’s launch of the Black Bay Fifty Eight was a boost for its retailers in the early days after lock down as the brand coordinated a huge marketing campaign that generated instant sales.

The scale of Rolex unveiling a full line up of new models, coupled with its legendary secrecy ahead of launches, look likely to have contributed to the choice of plan.
A source speaking to WatchPro did not have any insight into when new models will go on sale.
In normal years it has been several months between Rolex unveiling watches in March and getting them on sale in the summer.
Authorised dealers will be hoping lead times are far shorter this year so that they benefit from a spike in sales ahead of Christmas.
The Apple Watch Series 5 is the latest smartwatch to come from the iPhone-maker, but before looking at the styles and materials its important to consider the different smartwatch sizes that are available. Getting the right size smartwatch case is an important, but often overlooked factor in getting the most out of an Apple Watch experience.
Smartwatches are built to always be big enough to be accessible to the user, but never too big where it hinders the portability of the device. Tech companies want to ensure that the displays are spacious enough to view information, such as text messages, directions, and health info without straining the user's eyes. Making smartwatches too large, however, can inconvenience the user by either becoming too bulky and uncomfortable to wear or adding unnecessary weight to the device.
With the Apple Watch Series 5, Apple has kept the same dimensions as the Series 4 with a choice between the 40mm and 44mm case sizes. This is still larger than the Apple Watch Series 3 which is set at 38mm and 42mm. While being a fairly significant size difference the series 5 is still a comfortable size and it is thinner than the series 3, at 10.74mm. The weight difference varies significantly depending on the type of material. The aluminum case being the lightest and weighing in at 30.8g/36.5g, while the ceramic case is the heaviest at 39.7g/46.7g. Generally speaking, the series 5 remains a comfortable and easy to use option that's neither too large nor too small. However, having two different sizes leaves consumers with a choice to make on which is best for their individual needs.

Picking The Right Apple Watch Size
Wrist sizes are an important factor to take into consideration when choosing a smartwatch. While there are many different strap sizes that can accommodate different wrists, the larger case could still prove to be an issue. Those with smaller wrists might find larger smartwatch cases as clunky or ill-fitting. Therefore, a smaller smartwatch size might be more accommodating in this case. Poor eyesight or trouble looking at screens for prolonged amounts of time is another deciding factor when choosing the right sized watch. Having a larger display is very useful when reading messages or emails. The larger display can reduce the strain on people's eyes by not having to read smaller text or navigating the somewhat difficult UI.

When choosing an Apple Watch size, it always comes down to how the consumer will be using the watch. If they use it more for notifications, or as a quick way to listen to podcasts and music without using their phone, they are more likely to reap the full benefits of a larger display. However, if they are planning to use the watch as more of a fitness tool, then they might want to consider a smaller case. Having a smaller case will get in the way less while working out. There is a lot to consider when deciding what size is the right one, but overall the decision should come down to the size of the wrist and the reason for buying the smartwatch in the first place. Making a decision on these two main points will make it easier to choose between the larger and smaller Apple Watch Series 5.

An enterprising Tesla Model 3 owner has modified his “old school” Casio watch so that he can use it to open his electric car.
It’s a genius hack that allows Mattia Dal Ben to simply walk up to his Model 3 and wave his wrist near the front driver’s door until the car makes its characteristic “beep” and unlocks.
Tesla provides owners with a key card for opening their cars, and the cars also open when the owner’s smartphone (onto which the Tesla app has been loaded), is near the car.
Dal Ben shared the details of the modification via Hackaday.io, saying he decided to try out the hack because he’d discovered that sometimes his Tesla keyless entry didn’t work as expected. “This usually happens in the worst of circumstances,” he write in a description of the project.
“(Water is pouring from the sky? Well I won’t open for you sorry…). Something hacky was needed….” he writes.
Seriously, we think that this hack takes Tesla ownership into James Bond territory – and raises speculation again about why Tesla is reportedly involved in the development of a smart watch with Norway’s Xplora Technologies.
While we wait for more reveleations if Tesla will give new owners their own Tesla-branded smart watch with which to open their cars, we’ll have to be content with this Casio watch hack.
With tips from a fellow hacker Dacroneous, and inspired by a similar project, Dal Ben used a classic F-91W Casio watch, which costs around $20 to buy new, and a third party NFC (near field communication) card and a bit of wire to make his own antenna.
“I didn’t want to use an official Tesla card for this because the phone call to request a duplicate, if things went south, would have been quite awkward,” Dal Ben explained in his description of the hack.
As hacks go it’s ingeniously simple if not a bit fiddly – for techie types, at least. Dal Ben says there were a series of steps, including 3D printing a new back for the Casio watch, dissolving the card from its original casing and creating the new antenna.
Fine tuning the antenna to the correct frequency, and uploading an applet loaded onto the J3A040-CL Java card brought the project together.
The project impressed the typically canny Reddit crowd at /r/Teslamotors.
“Well done man. And nicely documented too,” commented one such Redditor.
“Like it wasn’t cool enough already….. đ Nice job!!!” said another.
“Is your name Micheal Knight? Cool mod and great write up, thanks for sharing!” said another referring to the 80s’ TV character from Knight Rider.
Dal Ben says he was also quite happy with the results – and that it’s even easier to use than opening his Tesla Model 3 using his smartphone or key card.
“The NFC communication is quite good and usable even in a pinch (more than taking out my phone or the key card from my wallet for sure) and the watch is comfortable to wear almost as it was before,” he said.

It’s been an exciting few weeks for watch fans. Last week, the innovative new Geneva Watch Days dominated headlines, with new releases from the likes of Ferdinand Berthoud, H. Moser & Cie, Carl F. Bucherer and Girard-Perregaux. This week however has got aficionados champing at the bit for a new Rolex release.
Rolex is the world’s most successful and famous luxury watch brand, and every September the watch community whips itself into a frenzy in anticipation of a new Rolex announcement. 2020 is no different, with Rolex dropping less than subtle hints about releasing a new Submariner model. A slick teaser campaign named ‘Out Of The Blue’ has built hype to fever pitch, with speculation about the new Submariner rife on the Internet.
Rolex normally do a good job of staying tight-lipped about new releases – however, 2020 has seen a slight lapse in standards. The highly-anticipated Tudor Black Bay Fifty Eight ‘Navy’ was leaked well in advance by sales-hungry authorised distributors (ADs), and it seems as if watch insiders might have figured out what Rolex’s big 2020 release has in store for us.
The word on the street is that the Sub will be released with two new colours: both with black dials, one with a deep blue bezel and one with a green bezel similar to the highly popular green dial / green bezel Submariner ‘Hulk’ – the most requested Rolex in recent memory.
The blue bezel prediction makes sense, as Rolex showed a glimpse of a blue lume 12 o’clock triangle in their first ‘Out Of The Blue’ teaser. A blue bezel Sub would be a fairly safe colour that would sell well, so maybe this is just a low-risk prediction considering what Rolex has already shared and market trends in 2020.

The green bezel seems to be a somewhat stranger prediction. While undoubtedly a green bezel paired with a black dial would be a tasty look, we feel as if it would just undermine sales of the Hulk. Why would Rolex jeopardise one of their cash cows?
This also all assumes that Rolex is only releasing one model this September. Market movements in the UK would suggest that Rolex is gearing up to release a new Explorer model, so maybe the Submariner hype is only a distraction.
In 24 hours we’ll find out anyway, so let’s just hold tight.
The smartwatch plans OnePlus shelved years ago could be back on the table, 9to5Google reports. 91Mobiles spotted a listing on the IMDA website for a “OnePlus Watch.” Beyond the model number, W301GB, we don’t know much, but there are a few reasons a smartwatch from OnePlus would make sense.
Several years ago, OnePlus CEO Carl Pei said the company was working on its own smartwatch. In 2016, he shared sketches on Twitter, but by that point, the company had scrapped plans to develop the wearable. It seems that the company thought it was overstretching, so it killed a bunch of non-phone projects. Flash forward to today: OnePlus has wireless earbuds and TVs -- a smartwatch seems a lot more feasible.
On the 1st of September, Rolex will be launching its 2020 novelties. For many watch collectors, this is perhaps one of the most highly anticipated event in the watch industry.
Most of the collectors are currently discussing the new models and/or variants that Rolex will be launching next week. Words have been floating around that we might be getting a Submariner with an improved movement, as well as a new variation of the Explorer II and Milgauss.
Regardless, the moment of truth will only be out when Rolex officially launches its new watches this Tuesday. In the meantime, we thought that it would be a great idea to look at some of our favourite novelties that Rolex had introduced in the past decade. What are some of the watches that we have selected? Let us find out!
Rolex Air King
If the usual Rolex watches bore you, then perhaps the Air King might be something that is worth a double take.
Launched in Baselworld 2016, the Air King was perhaps one of the most interesting watches that Rolex have launched in recent times. It is not a new collection, nor does the watch features any revolutionary complication or technical breakthroughs. The Air King was interesting for the fact that it features a contemporary and unique dial design – something that is a tad distinctive from the usual Rolex watches. The combined use of both hours and minutes numerals on the dial is unusual, and the yellow crown and green “Rolex” print makes its aesthetics even more unique.
While its appearance might be different, but the Air King is still a Rolex through and through. This means that it is still remains a well-built and robust timepiece. The 40mm watch features Rolex’s signature oyster case and bracelet, and its Calibre 3131 movement is Superlative Chronometer Certified (in which the movement is subjected to deviate only by 2 seconds daily). The Rolex Air King retails at S$8,610, and it is the ideal watch for someone who wants a Rolex that is not conservative and “boring”.
Rolex Sky-Dweller
Debuted in Baselworld 2012, the Sky-Dweller is the most complicated watch in the Rolex line-up currently. The intriguing timepiece features a novel way of setting the calendar via the bezel, in a system which Rolex calls the Command Ring. The Sky Dweller also features a second timezone.
The dial layout is a model of clarity and simplicity. There is the usual date display with a magnifying cyclops, and an additional month indicator that is integrated on the outer peripheral of the dial. Legibility is top notch, and the watch bears all the signatures of the traditional Rolex, from the fluted bezel to the markers with Chromalight. As usual, the build quality is an outstanding example of industrial manufacturing.
Now available in all materials from Everose, White Gold, Yellow Gold and also in Rolesor (White Gold bezel with Stainless Steel Bracelet and Yellow Gold bezel with Stainless Steel Bracelet with Yellow Gold links), there are many options in the Sky Dweller. The most popular being the Rolesor WG/SS version with a blue dial which retails for S$19,900. Precious metal versions are priced from S$54,160 onwards.
Rolex GMT-Master II “Root Beer”
The Baselworld 2018 saw Rolex relaunching one of the most highly anticipated variation of the GMT-Master II: The Root Beer.
“Root Beer” is a nickname given to the two-tone GMT-Master II watch with the brown and black bezel insert. This was popularised in the early 1970s with the Reference 16753 – and the large time gap in between two models (the old and the new iteration) certainly drove the anticipation of collectors, many of whom are great fans of this colour combination.
Mechanically-speaking, the GMT-Master II is powered by the in-house Calibre 3285. This movement is an upgrade from the previous Calibre 3186, and notable improvements include a 70 hour power reserve (up 40%), as well as the more efficient Chronergy escapement. The rest are pretty much the standard and reliable Rolex fare.
The “Root Beer” is priced at S$19,900, and we think it is one of the prettiest modern GMT-Master II to date. The very fact that two-tone Rolexes are generally less popular and yet the GMT-Master II has a long waiting list is a strong testament to its immense popularity.
Rolex Deepsea Sea-Dweller “D-Blue”
The Deepsea Sea-Dweller, or DSSD for short, first debuted in 2008. On the first glance, it seems like the DSSD is a blown-up version of both the Submariner and the Sea-Dweller. At 44mm (diameter), it is some 4mm larger than the Sea-Dweller.
The DSSD is definitely one of the largest and chunkiest timepiecse in the Rolex collection (with the exception the Deepsea Challenge). This, together with a helium escape valve and a 5.5mm thick sapphire crystal, allows the DSSD to reach a water-resistance depth of 3,900m (12,800ft). But it was not just the sheer size that attracted the attention of collectors. It was, in fact, the “D-Blue” variant (as shown above) that was the main talking point when it debuted in 2014. The gradient dial and bright green “DEEPSEA” letters are atypical of Rolex, but it certainly add a lot of vibrancy into the tool watch.
Priced at S$17,360, the Rolex DSSD “D-Blue” is a polarising piece that has its own fair share of fans and critics. However, if you are looking for something that makes a statement, then this is certainly one of the Rolex watches to consider.
Rolex Cosmograph Daytona
The Rolex Cosmograph Daytona is a watch that probably needs no further introduction. The latest variant, which was updated in 2016, features some slight cosmetic changes with includes a new scratch-proof black Cerachrom bezel. Besides that, there are few differences as compared to its predecessor.
Powered by the in-house Caliber 4130, the self-winding movement is fitted with a column wheel and vertical clutch system for its chronograph function. It has a decent power reserve of around 72 hours, and the movement is certified to perform with an accuracy of +/- 2 seconds per day.
The 40mm watch is priced at S$17,640. It is virtually impossible to get the timepiece, with a waiting list that stretches for up to a few years. But the Daytona is truly a solid timepiece, and we dare say that it is one of the best all-rounder timepieces that is available in the market today.
Rolex Cellini Moonphase
Forget about the likes of Submariner and Daytona. When it comes to Rolex watches, the Cellini collection is probably one of the best timepieces that is produced by the Geneva-based watch manufacturer.
The Cellini is not a well-known collection. In fact, it is one of the least popular series of watches from Rolex. But for those who knows it, the Cellini is one of the best kept secrets from the famed manufacturer. The Moonphase, for instance, is one of our favourite pieces when it was launched in Baselworld 2017. It is still one of our favourites, for its elegance and impeccable attention to detail. The latter is especially pronounced in the moonphase indicator, in which is crafted with an enamelled disc and meteorite moon. Stunning is an understatement for that.
The 39mm timepiece is priced at S$35,970. There might be other Rolexes that are priced within the same range too, but we reckon that this Cellini is worth taking the leap of faith. It is a truly special piece, and one that really shows what Rolex is capable of doing.
Concluding Thoughts
While many have claimed that Rolex is a “boring” brand, but its novelties over the last decade seems to have proven otherwise. Rolex had certainly injected some vibrancy into its watches, and timepieces such as the Cellini Moonphase and Sky-Dweller had certainly proved that Rolex is capable of producing new and impressive models altogether.
What will Rolex bring to us come September? Your guess is perhaps as good as mine. Let us hope that the Geneva-based manufacturer will be injecting some brilliant creations and light up an otherwise gloomy 2020.
Rolex will launch a black and green Oystersteel Submariner in a 41mm size on Tuesday, WatchPro has been told by a source with a reliable history of gleening inside information.
WatchPro cannot verify the claim and Rolex never responds to speculation ahead of its launches.
The source says it is 100% confirmed the steel sub will come in the new size.

Rolex”s Kermit, with black dial and green bezel, previously had the old aluminium insert when it launched in 2003.
This will be upgraded to Rolex”s scratch-resistant Cerachrom, which does not fade.

The Mercedes branded sword and Breguet-style hands add to the eliteness and authenticity. It’s the perfect selection of watch for judicious men with a taste for classic with a twist.
