Sotheby’s Hong Kong has just smashed a new record with the sale of a rare automatic lapis lazuli dial Rolex Cosmograph Daytona. The watch case is made entirely out of platinum and features a lapis lazuli stone dial. Originally estimated to sell for $4 million – $8 million HKD ($516,000 – $1,032,000 USD) to watch went under the hammer for an astounding $25.37 million HKD ($3.27 million USD).
The reference 16516 Daytona features a Zenith movement and is said to be the only know platinum Daytona with a lapis lazuli hardstone dial. A similar watch from the same series — also made in platinum but with a mother-of-pearl dial — sold in 2018 for a price of $871,000 USD. This sale marks the record for the most expensive automatic Rolex Daytona sold.
