Withings, a French company with health and fitness monitoring at its heart, has just revealed more details about its upcoming ScanWatch, and it’s on its way. Finally.
As CEO Mathieu Letombe explains on the Withings website, the ScanWatch has slowed down clinical studies for some of the smartwatch’s more advanced capabilities. Medical certification has just been granted for Europe, which is where it will initially be available when it goes on sale in September.
Smartwatches like Apple Watch and Fitbit Versa 2 have striking health and fitness capabilities but at Withings these are central to all the company’s products.
It was briefly owned by Nokia, when it was renamed Nokia Health, which is another clue to how important these concerns are to the company. Now back under its original Withings branding, its range of products continues to grow. There’s a sleep monitoring pad, a really excellent thermometer, blood pressure sleeves and smart bathroom scales.
There are also four smartwatches, with a fifth, the most exciting one of all, due to arrive in the coming weeks.
The Withings ScanWatch is a hybrid smartwatch, that is, it has real analog hands instead of a smart screen, plus a second dial which counts your daily exercise steps. So, it looks and feels like a real watch.
But then there’s another circle at the top of the watch face, perfectly mirroring the steps dial. This is a pin-sharp monochrome screen which delivers notifications and shows health information, such as which exercise you want it to measure now.
Like the current Withings Move ECG, you can take an ECG on the watch, with the heart rate details appearing on the display. The heart rate monitor on the back of the watch also checks your heart rate during the day and lets you know if unusually high or low readings are spotted, or irregular rhythms.
And it does plenty more.
It can use its SpO2 sensor to calculate the oxygen saturation level in your blood – something that has become more high-profile since the arrival of Covid-19 where monitoring blood oxygen levels has been important in some cases.
Wear the ScanWatch at night and the SpO2 sensor can help detect sleep apnea, which is sometimes associated with high blood pressure and other concerns. When you wake, the ScanWatch companion app can show how many apneic episodes it spotted while you slept.
The rechargeable battery lasts up to 30 days.
While it lacks the full-color screen of the Apple Watch, for many its more discreet traditional-watch look is part of its appeal. I’ve tried a lot of Withings smartwatches through the years and they are well-built, reliable and high-performance gadgets. I hope to review the ScanWatch soon.
It’s due to arrive in September in Europe, priced at $249 (£229 U.K., €249) for the 38mm model and $299 (£279 U.K., €299).
