Grand Seiko has just released a stunning example of a classic, hand-wound mechanical watch. The watch pays homage to both traditional Japanese craftsmanship and Seiko’s history watchmaking by housing its 9S64 caliber movement (72-hour power reserve) and a dial that’s made using Urushi dial techniques.
The Urushi lacquer dial is sourced from trees grown outside of the town of Joboji, under Mt. Iwate. The mountain is often referred to as “Nanbu Fuji” for its resemblance to Mount Fuji, and can be seen from the Shizukuishi Watch Studio. Combined with the rich, jet-black lacquer dial are gold Arabic numerals and highly legible indices decorated with a raised maki-e technique from Isshu Tamura – a master of Kaga Maki-e Urushi.
The watch is finished with a full 18K-gold case, dual-curved sapphire glass, and a crocodile strap with 18K buckle. Grand Seiko collectors can find this over at the watchmaker’s official website for a hefty $30,000 USD.
