WearBuds Combine A Smartwatch And Earbuds In One Handy Device - Forbes

Innovation in the consumer technology space has seen some incredible inventions recently that few people could have predicted. The products fall into two categories. The first is products that are a complete surprise that nobody foresaw, while the other is an evolution of existing technology where two or more categories are fused to create a third category.

A case in point is the convergence of earphones and smartwatches. WearBuds are earbuds that are stored in a smartwatch instead of a regular charging case. Wearbuds are being launched on Indiegogo and are billed as the world’s first true wireless earbuds that live in a watch. That claim isn’t strictly true as Aipower floated an earlier generation of WearBuds a year ago. At the time, I was too busy to review them plus I wasn’t sure if it was a concept that could gain traction in a market already crowded with true wireless earbuds and smartwatches.

The WearBuds use graphene-augmented dynamic drivers and claim to produce a deep bass and crisp trebles. Whether the drivers are made using pure graphene isn’t clear but the choice of dynamic drivers over balanced armature technology is a sensible one as dynamic drivers can withstand the punishment dished out during vigorous exercise.

Airpower’s goal was to create a device that has the intelligence of a smartwatch and the convenience of true wireless earbuds for sporting use. The wearables market is hot right now and the makers of WearBuds claim they will suit anyone who dislikes carrying a charging case when out for a morning run.

MORE FOR YOU

WearBuds can pair with any smartphone, but the earbuds offer under three hours of playtime from a single charge. That’s quite low these days but the smartwatch holds up to ten hours of reserve power with which to recharge the earbuds. The playtime figure is not all that important as I don’t think many people exercise for more than one hour without taking a break unless they are running a marathon.

Thanks to the latest Bluetooth 5.0, WearBuds can be used to make phone calls with a single earbud enabling easy hands-free calling with one or both earbuds. The smartwatch captures health data with logs for individual workouts using its dedicated app.

Essential health data including blood pressure, oxygen and heart rate can be recorded and there are sedentary notifications and comprehensive sleep are also recorded. The watch can also display smartphone notifications which can be customized for calls, texts, Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, Instagram and some other social media platforms.

I can’t vouch for WearBuds in any way. I’ve not seen a pair and therefore I haven’t tried them, so I won’t pass an opinion at this time. However, for anyone who wants a smartwatch with true wireless earbuds, this could be worth a look. There’s a hint of James Bond about WearBuds but I’m unsure if they will find favor with gym bunnies or cyclists. There’s no doubt that some people will welcome the idea of being able to ditch their earbuds’ charging case when out for a run or a bike ride.

Pricing and Availability: Aipower Wearbuds Watch is available now by pledging on Indiegogo. A pledge of $129 gives a Wearbuds Watch (smartwatch and earbuds) but Aipower claims the price will rise to $269 upon completion of the campaign.
