It’s the first day of summer, which also means it’s a good time to get outside — and to invest in a fitness watch to track your activities. Thankfully, this Prime Day you won’t need to make as much of an investment as usual, because Garmin’s Vivoactive 4S GPS Smartwatch — the same one Strategist senior writer (and long-distance runner) Karen Adelson uses every day — is almost 50 percent off. In her review of the watch, Adelson writes that “along with excelling at what every other fitness tracker in its category can do (tracking steps, stairs climbed, sleep, heart rate, and, like the new Apple Watch, pulse oximetry), the Vivoactive can be almost endlessly customized. You can change up all the display screens to get the information you want. Right now, I can see my daily steps and mileage count with a leopard-print background. And you can download apps like Uber, Spotify, Strava, contactless payment, and many more — including ultraspecific ones for triathlons, skiing/snowboarding, and even a Pomodoro timer for productivity.”
Adelson also says the watch has made her a “better, smarter runner,” because if she’s shooting to maintain a specific pace or heart rate during the workout, she can “see that on the watch in real time … and also take advantage of the watch’s Body Battery score to know when I can really push myself.” Originally priced at $350, for today only, it’s discounted to just $190 — the cheapest it’s ever been.
For a cheaper (but still expert-recommended) option, Garmin’s entry-level running watch, the Forerunner 45S, is also on sale today. Running coach Jonathan Cane told us it would “certainly do the trick for a new runner, and will be adequate even for a more hard-core athlete.”
