NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Four days after posting the season's top NCAA Division III time in the steeplechase, Matt Wilkinson (Sr./Greenwood, Minn./Minnetonka) repeated the feat in the 5000-meter run at the Rolex Classic. In the process, the Carleton College senior took down the MIAC overall record in the event and now ranks as seventh-fastest in D-III history.
Carleton won 11 events overall in the annual clash against Northfield rival St. Olaf College.
Wilkinson pulled away from the field early and posted a time of 13:58.25, eclipsing the previous MIAC record by more than 14 seconds and smashing his previous personal best by 25 seconds. That is also not only the top time in NCAA Division III this season, but it ranks Wilkinson as seventh-fastest in D-III history. One of the six men faster that Wilkinson is Hall of Famer Dale Kramer, who clocked a time of 13:53.19 in 1977 (when Carleton was still in the Midwest Conference).
