A 41-year-old Vista man accused of stealing an $`18,000 Rolex watch from an Encinitas home Saturday was arrested Wednesday evening after crossing into the U.S. from Mexico, a sheriff’s sergeant said.
The man broke into the occupied home on Devonshire Drive near Melba Road on Saturdayshortly after 11 a.m. while a female resident was inside, said sheriff’s Sgt. Paul Michalke. There was no sign of forced entry but the homeowner insists her doors were locked, the sergeant said.
She called 911 after spotting the man inside her home.
Michaelke said there was no verbal or physical contact between the man and the resident. Investigators think the man got “spooked” to find someone was home, grabbed a watch and took off running, Michalke said.
Investigators were able to identify the man from surveillance video from another location, the sergeant said.
He was arrested Wednesday by San Diego police on suspicion of violating his parole and suspicion of burglary after he crossed the border and officials noted he was being sought on a parolee-at-large warrant.
The man had the stolen watch in his possession at the time he was detained, Michalke said.
He was booked into jail on Wednesday night, according to jail records. He is being held without bail because of the parole violation.
Anyone with information about the case was asked to call the Sheriff’s Department at (858) 565-5200 or can call anonymously to San Diego County Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
