Smartwatch fans outside of China may finally be able to get their hands on a heavy-hitting budget smartwatch: the Xiaomi Mi Watch Color Sports Edition has been officially revealed.

At Xiaomi's big smartphone launch event last month it revealed that a global launch was being prepped for an international version of its Mi Watch.

It showed off a few images of a device that looked a lot different to the original Mi Watch and a bit different the (even cheaper) Mi Watch Color, which both launched in China earlier this year.

We now know that the images were of the all new Xiaomi Mi Watch Color Sports Edition, which adds the SpO2 sensor into the mix.

The good news is that the price is still an the low side - it will costs ¥699 when it goes on sale in China next month.

Global prices are a release date are still to be revealed but that price-tag suggests a price-tag of around £85 when it does hit our stores.

Here's what you're getting for that...

Xiaomi Mi Watch Color Sports Edition features

Visually, it looks most like the Mi Watch Color – the original Mi Watch was a boxy Apple Watch clone.

The Mi Watch Color Sports Edition weighs in at 32.5g and boasts a 1.39-inch AMOLED display, with a 454 x 454 resolution.

It’s packed with sensors for all that sports-based tracking: heart rate, GPS, Glonass and SpO2 blood oxygen show it’s not here to be dominated by Apple and Fitbit.

There are 117 exercise modes, including the likes of running, yoga, boxing, triathlon and high-intensity interval training. It is also swim-friendly thanks to a 5 ATM water-resistant rating.

Xiaomi states that while a sports session or a workout is being tracked, 30 key metrics are analyzed; think calorie consumption, stress, pace, BPMs, SpO2 and more.

The battery on board is a a 420mAh cell with a promised two week lifespan from a single charge. Obviously that will take a hit once you start ramping up the sensor use, particularly GPS.

There are three colors to choose from when it comes to the bezel and case: black, blue and ivory; and there are a further six color options when it comes to the silicone strap.

The Xiaomi Mi Watch Color Sports Edition is on pre-order direct from Xiaomi right now. Shipping in China is set for the first week in November.

Crowded house

When the Mi Watch Sports Edition does go on sale outside of China it will be heading into an ever-expanding marketplace, with plenty of Chinese phone makers aggressively targeting smartwatches.

Huawei has seen traction with its Watch GT range, which have impressed us with long battery life and good health focussed features – although the closed OS is slightly limiting.

And Amazfit, whose owner Huami has a manufacturing partnership with Xiaomi, has also announced the GTS2 and GTR2, which offer sports tracking and similar feature sets to the Mi Watch, at a slightly high price.

And finally, the TicWatch GTX was announced recently at £54.99, undercutting the Amazfit Bip S at £64.99.

The budget smartwatch market is on fire at the moment.
