While traditional watch retailers wait out the pandemic with mostly shuttered doors, auction sales are booming. Rarely seen Grail pieces and affordable yet rarely seen pieces alike are hitting the secondary market as people cull their collections.

Coming up at Phillips’ Geneva Watch Auction: XII on November 6 is a Patek Philippe ref. 2523/1 in rose gold, a double-crowned world timer with a guilloché dial that Phillips defines as “mythical.” It is one of only four 2523 references ever made in rose gold, and one of only two to ever appear at auction. Another is in the Patek Philippe museum in Geneva. Patek’s 24-city world time watches are rare, and distinctive for their hand crafted dials of guilloché or enamel. Launched in 1953, the reference 2523 debuted a new two-crown system, one for winding the watch and the other at 9 o’clock to control the city disk. It is estimated to sell at between $2-million and $4-million.

Coming up at Christie’s online watch auction from October 1-14 is a double rarity – a Rolex Daytona, the most sought-after watch in the world right now, with a special provenance. It was owned by racing legend Carroll Smith, the driver and engineer best known for working with Carroll Shelby and the Ford Motor Company on the GT40 Le Mans Project, which inspired the film Ford vs. Ferrari. Smith oversaw preparations for the winning cars in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1966 and 1967. The Daytona ref. 6265 was gifted to him by the Cuddy Racing team, headed by the notorious Bill Cuddy, known for his racing as well as his run-ins with the law. Accompanying the watch are two books by Carroll Smith: Prepare to Win and Drive to Win. The watch is estimated at $150,000-$200,000.

On the block at Sotheby’s is a modern watch bearing the signature of Napoleon Bonaparte as it appears in a letter he wrote in 1807. The back of the watch is set with a 20-franc gold Napoleon coin minted in 1807. It was made by independent Swiss watchmaker Golay-Spierer as the first in a series commemorating historic figures. The watch is estimated at CHF 40,000-80,000 (about $43,500-$87,000), and is being offered in an online auction from October 8 to 15. A portion of proceeds will go to charity.

Christie’s, Sotheby’s and Phillips are all reporting normal to higher-than-average sale results this year in spite of the pandemic. Record sales have included a rare Patek Philippe ref. 1518 for $3,565,224 at a Phillips auction; $1,545,723 at a Sotheby’s auction for a Rolex John Player Special, a record for that model; and Christie’s sold a rare Patek Philippe Ref. 5033 minute repeater for $1,950,870. This should not discourage aficionados who have neither the budget nor the desire to own high-ticket rarities. There are also plenty of wearable pieces that are both collectible and rare under $10,000, many of them in the online auctions.
