Running from October 1 to 13, Christie’s latest “Watches Online: Discovering Time” auction is offering up a rare vintage timepiece automotive and motorsport fans will no doubt deeply appreciate: the Rolex Daytona once owned and worn by the late racing legend Carroll Smith.
Beginning his career as a racecar driver, Smith would go on to work alongside Carroll Shelby at Ford to develop the world famous GT40 (as seen in Ford vs Ferrari) that won the Le Mans 24-hour race over four consecutive years, as well as play a part in Ferrari’s F1 dominance in the ’70s thanks to his engineering expertise. The watch itself — a ref. 6265 with its panda dial and steel tachymeter bezel — was a gift from the Cuddy Racing Team to Smith, commemorating the L&M F5000 Championship Series back in 1973, an event immortalized through the engraved caseback.
