BEAMS and SEIKO Prospex have redesigned the watchmaker’s 1965 dive watch. The mechanical diver’s watch, famously worn by Kiyoshi Atsumi who played Tora-San in the movie Otoko wa Tsuraiyo, has been updated after 50 years while faithfully maintaining its vintage look and feel.
The iterations of the throwback Prospex are nuanced. Inspired by the dim lighting of movie theaters, the dial of the watch has been changed to black. Complementing this is the watch’s shiny steel case, which features the world’s highest grade of corrosion resistance, stamped with a motif of a dolphin with a hat and a suitcase that nods to Tora-San’s iconic attire. Manufactured by Shizukuishi Luxury Watch Studio, the model is equipped with a mechanical 8L35 movement. Both “BEAMS JAPAN” and “Otoko wa Tsuraiyo” branding have also been added to the piece, while its reinforced rubber watch strap round up the details of the vintage-inspired redesign. The watch also comes with a unique serial number ranging from “001/300” to “300/300” as a nod to its limited production run.
BEAMS and SEIKO’s redesigned 1965 Prospex is currently available for pre-order on BEAMS’ website for $5,011 USD with a limited run of just 300 units.
