Rolex unveils a set of novelties for 2020, including a new generation of the Oyster Perpetual Submariner, and a new Oyster Perpetual 41.
Back in March, when Rolex announced that it would be pushing back any new launches, we’d prepared to wait till at least the year end. So it came as a very welcome surprise when the Swiss watchmaker decided to reveal its fresh portfolio of watches for the year. Ranging from a sleek, new rendition of the iconic submariner, to durable signatures, we go over our favourite models from this cohort of new entries.
A New Generation of the Submariner
This year’s new novelties includes new renditions of Rolex’s Oyster Perpetual Submariner, and the Oyster Perpetual Submariner Date. The iconic diver now comes with a redesigned, slightly larger 41mm case in both versions, with light reflections from the case sides and lugs highlighting the watch profile, all fitted on a remodelled bracelet. Both models are equipped with cutting edge movements, from the calibre 3230 on the Submariner, to the Submariner Date with calibre 3235, which offers both time and date functions, marking the first time the movement is used in the Submariner range. Aesthetics-wise, the new Submariner in Oystersteel comes with a black dial complete with rotatable bezel, and a Cerachrom insert to match. A yellow Rolesor version of the Submariner Date is also available, combining the Oystersteel and 18 ct yellow gold.
A New Datejust
Presented in a new, white Rolesor version — here, Oystersettel is combined with 18 ct white gold — the new Oyster Perpetual Datejust 31 is a stunning model, which features dials in an impressive variety of hues. Here, both the index hour markers and Roman numerals are made out of 18 ct white gold. In one version, the bezel is set with 46 brilliant-cut diamonds, while an aubergine, sunray-finished dial is adorned with a diamond-set Roman VI. Three other versions are respectively fitted with a mint green, sunray-finish dial, a white lacquer dial, or a dark grey, sunray-finish dial, and a fluted bezel in 18 ct white gold. Movement-wise, these timepieces come with the calibre 2236, and, of course, carry the Superlative Chronometer certification.
A Wholly Revised Oyster Perpetual
Totally revised, the Oyster Perpetual range welcomes a whole new addition to the family — the Oyster Perpetual 41, powered by the calibre 3230. Light reflections on the case sides draw emphasis on the elegant profile of the case, which too is created using Oystersteel. A domed bezel is fitted over the 41mm case, while a luminescent material coats the hands and hour markers, emitting a striking blue glow in the dark.
A Sky-Dweller at New Heights
Fitted with an Oysterflex bracelet for the first time, the Oyster Per
petual Sky-Dweller is innovative, and all about high-performance. The 18 ct yellow gold model also comes complete with an Oysterclasp, and the Rolex Glidelock extension to boot — offering wearers optimum comfort on the wrist. The first of the watchmaker’s classics to include this cutting-edge bracelet, the Oyster Perpetual Sky-Dweller also features a bright black, sunray-finish dial, with hands and hour markers in 18 ct yellow gold. Rolex enthusiasts will recognise the fluted, rotatable bezel — a unique trait of the Sky-Dweller — which serves to set the watch in conjunction with the Ring Command system. This version of the Sky-Dweller comes with the calibre 9001, and also has a chroma light display.
