Apple Still Leading The Way With Smartwatch Shipments But Huawei Is Hot On Its Heels - Forbes

Apple grew its smartwatch dominance from a market share of 43.2 percent for the first half of 2019, to 51.4 per cent for H1 2020.

That’s according to analysis from Sujeong Lim of Korea’s Counterpoint Research.

Lim’s report suggests that, despite the obvious effects of the global pandemic on consumers, that smartwatch shipments are actually up 20 percent year-on-year for the first halves of 2019 and 2020 compared.

“The smartwatch space remains a popular consumer device segment, compared to the downturn seen in smartphone demand and many other segments in the first six months of 2020 due to the devastation caused by COVID-19,” explains Lim.

“Close to 42 million smartwatches were shipped in the first half of 2020 as wearables continue to see greater demand with consumers becoming more health conscious. India (+57 percent YoY), Europe (+9 percent YoY) and the US (+5 percent YoY), the most affected regions of COVID-19, saw a healthy growth in smartwatch shipments which offset the decline in other markets.”

Apple’s reported growth may be staggering but one of the most interesting aspects of the report is the continued acceleration of Chinese behemoth Huawei in the smartwatch space.

Lim’s report suggests that the Shenzhen-based company now has a 8.3 percent market share, compared to around 5 percent for the same period in 2019.

This backs up Canalys’ Wearable Band Analysis May 2020 report, which suggested that Huawei had seen a 113 percent year-on-year increase in shipments, up to over 2 million in Q1 2020 compared to just 1 million for Q1 2019.

That Canalys report suggested that Apple had lost some ground in the smartwatch market and that Korean-rival Samsung had also gained ground, but Counterpoint Research estimates Samsung to have dropped its share of the smartwatch pie from over 9 percent, to just over 7 percent.

This latest report also has Fitbit and Fossil losing a bit of traction, with the likes of Garmin, Xiaomi and Amazfit seeing shipments increasing.

Google’s WearOS, once again, appears to be the smartwatch platform that needs to do the most work, with just a 10 percent overall market share.
