WELLINGTON — Germany's Daniel Deusser, the most dominant rider at the Winter Equestrian Festival, won his first $500,000 FEI Rolex Grand Prix Saturday at the windswept grassy Stadium Derby Field at Equestrian Village.

Deusser, 39, and his 13-year-old Zangersheide, Scuderia 1918 Tobago Z, were flawless in the opening round and eight-rider jump-off winning in 36.40 seconds. He pocketed $165,000 and a Rolex watch, his biggest payday on the circuit.

It was Deusser's seventh win at WEF, including his fourth five-star event.

"It was a little bit in my favor today that I had to start second to last in the first round and last in the jump-off," said the 2016 Olympic bronze medalist who's ranked third in the world.

"I knew exactly what I had to do. And in the end, I have to say once it works out and the horse jumps how he jumps, it was not too difficult."

Scuderia 1918 Tobago Z, owned by Stephex Stables and Scuderia 1918, was competing in his biggest class of the season. He was injured in 2019 but recovered and resumed competing at the end of 2020.

"Tobago has been my best horse for years," Deusser said. "He has won many grand prix classes and also he really likes big grass arenas. He was in very, very good shape already the last couple of weeks here. He kept his form and performed great."

Two-time Olympian Daniel Bluman of Israel, a Florida Atlantic University and Weston Cypress Bay alum, and his 10-year-old mount Gemma W, were second in 36.54 and won $100,000.

Bluman, the 2012 Rolex champion, was leading with defending champion McLain Ward and Deusser left to go in the jump-off.

"I'm not going to say that I am surprised that Daniel beat me," Bluman said. "He is a little bit of a pain for us when he shows up because he is on a different level. You have to say it how it is. We have to keep working to be able to ride the way that he rides."

Bluman said there were a couple places on the course he could have saved time.

"But realistically I know that whatever I did, McLain and Daniel were going to follow just as fast or faster. My strategy was to put in a good time and then put enough pressure that they had to take risks."

Harrie Smolders, 40, of the Netherlands and 10-year-old Selle Francais gelding Bingo Du Parc were third in 36.74 and won $75,000.

"He did a fantastic job," Smolders said. "It was a serious test for him. I think we have seen several horse-rider combinations that we will see back in the Olympics."

Ward, looking for his fifth Rolex, and Contagious were fourth in 34.94 with four faults and won $50,000. Olympic hopeful Jessica Springsteen and Don Juan Van De Donkhoeve were fifth in 37.21 with four faults for $30,000.

Held for the first time in event history on the grassy field, a star-studded lineup of 40 starters featured 17 Olympians from 14 nations and four of the world's Top 10 riders, including No. 2 Martin Fuchs.

The oldest rider and horse in the field, hometown favorite Margie Engle, 62, and Royce, 17, were 30th in 86.53 with eight faults in the opening round. Earlier this week, it was announced the Olympic veteran and 2018 Rolex winner will be inducted into the Show Jumping Hall of Fame Class of 2020 in May at Devon.

Olympian and 2011 Rolex winner Laura Kraut, sidelined for four weeks with a broken collarbone, returned with Confu and finished 27th in 86.15 with eight faults.

On Thursday, Ashlee Bond of Israel and Donatello 141 topped a field of 55 riders in the opening round and 14 in the jump-off to win the $137,000 Adequan WEF Challenge Cup on the Derby Field. The pair finished in 40.29 seconds.

The 12th and final major WEF event of the season, the $214,000 FEI CSI4 Wellington Ag Services Grand Prix, will be he Saturday at 8 a.m. in the International Arena.

The equestrian competitions will remain closed to spectators but will be live streamed for free throughout the week at www.PBIEC.com.

Consider them the Gordon Gekkos of the Swiss watch industry, maligned as symbols of 1980s-style excess. For years now, gold watches have played second fiddle to more practical steel sport models, demand for which has continued to soar even in the midst of the pandemic.

But some watch dealers are convinced we’re on the brink of a long-awaited gold rush, with the precious metal breaking the $2,000-an-ounce barrier for the first time in August. Fine jewelry has already seen a return to the material at nearly every major brand, while Gucci made a splash with its retro, $1,800 jumping-hour Grip watch in yellow gold. Driven by interest from the Asian market, as well as a general flight to tangible assets in light of the past year’s economic uncertainty, gold appears to be, finally, on an upswing.

“The lasting value of gold fueled the sale of gold watches and jewelry throughout 2020, and we don’t see an end to this trend,” says Ruediger Albers, president of Wempe Jewelers, a luxury watch and jewelry boutique on New York’s Fifth Avenue that is selling gold models such as the Rolex Submariner, the Patek Philippe Twenty~4 ladies series and Chopard’s new Alpine Eagle. “Plus, people are tired of being grim and gray,” Albers says. “They want a little bit of glam.”

Gold watches are also starting to keep pace in the secondary market as skyrocketing demand for steel models from the big three—Audemars Piguet, Rolex and Patek Philippe—creates scarcity. In its white-, yellow- and rose-gold configurations, the beloved, discontinued Patek Philippe Chronograph Ref. 5070 still sells for less than the brand’s elusive (also recently discontinued) steel 5711/1A, a.k.a. the Nautilus, on WatchBox, the pre-owned e-tailer. But according to WatchBox CEO Justin Reis, who spoke to Robb Report in February, availability of select gold Rolexes has tightened as demand has seemingly doubled, noting that “40-millimeter gold Day-Dates are going over retail for the first time ever” and “Patek Philippe Nautiluses in rose gold are trading at approximately two times their retail value.”

Paul Altieri, founder and CEO of Bob’s Watches, an online pre-owned Rolex dealer, has noticed the same trend. “The yellow-gold GMT-Master II with green dial is crazy hot,” he says. Among Rolex collectors, a little extra “something” on the dial always attracts interest and usually adds value. This may be the signature or crest of a Middle Eastern head of state, a branch of a foreign armed forces, a pioneering technical dive company or, indeed, a pizza shop.

These days, Rolex is reluctant to put anything other than its own name on its dials, but back in the 1960s and 1970s, when it was fighting for market share, promotional dials with brand logos were a big thing, especially in the US. These were not aftermarket additions, but factory-applied official dials advertising everything from oil companies, trucking, the Masons, beer, Coca-Cola and Chevrolet – typically intended as sales awards, corporate gifts or to mark retirement. The longest-running association is with Domino’s Pizza, starting in the 1970s and continuing to this day.

The origin story is a little hazy and actually starts with Bulova. A franchisee asked what he had to do to get that watch from me, and I told him, ‘Turn in a $20,000 sales week.’ He did it.” After that first Bulova, Monaghan handed out branded Seikos for a few years before settling on Rolex’s Air-King ref 5500.

Curiously, in September 2016, Morphy Auctions sold a “Domino’s” branded 5500 with a four million serial number, dating it to around 1975. Seemingly produced as a prototype and later serviced by Rolex with no changes, this was claimed to be the first one used in the “Domino’s Challenge”. This may mean that Monaghan’s story is apocryphal or maybe he got his dates wrong. Either way, the challenge continued and the Rolexes continued to be awarded.

Today, the company has grown, targets are higher and thus the challenge is more ambitious: the goal needs to be achieved four weeks in a row. The watches are still handed out, though no longer Air-Kings, as they were briefly discontinued in 2014, causing Domino’s to shift to the Oyster Perpetual. 

Over the decades, the Domino’s Rolex has evolved. The logo has changed in size and orientation, briefly going black and white in 1991 before reverting to colour the next year. Ladies have not been left out, with Domino’s branded Oyster Perpetuals available in 24mm cases from ref 67194 onwards. In the mid-2000s the logo left the dial entirely, becoming a more subtle piece of branding on the first link of the bracelet and conforming to Rolex’s more draconian modern dial policy. The logo was simplified further in 2012, becoming a rectangular domino piece with no wording. This was in line with Domino’s decision to drop “Pizza” from the brand logo and to expand its product line. 

A relatively affordable collectible, a contemporary “bracelet logo” OP sells for the same price as a non-branded one, which is to say, of course, significantly over list price. Older “dial logo” prices are rising but vary wildly: a ref 14000 sold for $5,100 at Bonhams in December 2020, while two months earlier one fetched $20,000 at Christie’s. With dial styles and case back engraving changing so much over the years, due diligence is crucial to ensure your Domino’s is the real deal.
